Atos, a global leader in digital transformation, participates and coordinates the European project CANDELA with the objective of enriching the Copernicus ecosystem and leveraging satellite Earth Observation for different European services which can be related to climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Copernicus EU Programme monitors and forecasts the environment on land, sea and atmosphere, and provides free-accessible operational data and information services with reliable and up-to-date information regarding environmental issues.

CANDELA research project investigates the use of novel techniques for the development of a platform that allows easy access, operation and exploration to all Copernicus data and information on the Earth Observation ecosystem to the scientific community, entrepreneurs, developers and the general public who wish to process the data to provide their own Copernicus based services.

The project allows the creation of value from Copernicus data through the provisioning of modeling and analytics tools for data collection, processing, storage, and access provided by Copernicus Data and Information Access Service (DIAS). Moreover, CANDELA platform bridges the gap between Big Data technology and the Earth Observation data user community.

CANDELA is designing, implementing and validating algorithms related to crop health and yield assessment, and will also prove the value of remote sensing data collection for the monitoring of forest health conditions in France.

According to Jose Lorenzo, Coordinator of CANDELA from Atos Spain, “CANDELA is ready to provide a powerful platform that can bring scalability to any DIAS with promising analytics tools”. Four main blocks of tools are being developed in CANDELA:

  • Earth Observation (EO) data mining for classification and change detection.
  • Deep Learning for change detection on time series for optical and radar Earth observation data.
  • Semantic search and indexation of EO and non-EO data.
  • Data fusion techniques to merge pre-processed data that came from various sources.

Atos is involved with teams in two EU countries. On one side, through its Research and Innovation group in Spain, Atos coordinates the project and leads the tasks related to impact and business activities along with dissemination and innovation. On the other side, Atos France is involved and responsible for the demonstrator implementation tasks.

CANDELA makes part of the Horizon 2020 Research Programme and its consortium consists of seven partners from five European countries: Atos Spain and Atos France, Thales Alenia Space, the German Aerospace Center, the Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse (IRIT), CloudFerro, TerraNIS SAS, and SmallGIS Ltd.
